On behalf of the Elmwood Cemetery Society welcome to our website.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places Elmwood is rich in history through the stories of the lives of many of Kansas City’s early founders. A large number of them helped shaped what Kansas City has become today. Many had a great impact nationally. Elmwood is the final resting place for twelve former Kansas City mayors, over 2,000 veterans (including 800 from the Civil War), and scores of civic and business leaders.
Elmwood is also the final resting place for over 36,000 souls whose stories have, before now, been remembered only by their families and close friends.
We invite you to explore this site and learn more about all of the people buried in Elmwood. Learn more about their role in shaping the heart of America. Visit and contribute to our Family History Project, and hopefully make a connection with an ancestor. Learn more about their individual hopes, dreams, and achievements.
The Elmwood Cemetery Society is charged with sharing our history, while maintaining dignity and respect for loved ones buried within its 43 acres of beautiful grounds. To do this we need your help. Like many rural cemeteries that are virtually buried out, there is very little income. The cemetery has no paid staff and is kept open and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers. The costs alone to mow 43 acres around thousands of large monuments is staggering. So, enjoy the website, come visit the beautiful grounds, research your family legacies, but please keep us in mind. Financial support is always welcomed, Volunteers are constantly needed.
Please contact us if you have questions about the cemetery or if you would like to be a part of contributing to the preservation of Elmwood Cemetery, a historical treasure in the heart of Kansas City.
